Every year or so, a handful of people with big souls and Ford Motor Company shake hands and agree to auction a special edition Mustang for a great cause. This time around, that cause isn't charity but raising funds for training next-generation jet fighter pilots. For the 2015 EAA AirVenture, the Blue Oval prepared this car - the Ford Mustang Apollo Edition.
Since the S550 Mustang was launched, the FoMoCo peeps turned it into many special editions, limited editions, one-offs, and other whatnots. On the other side of the spectrum, a tuner from Texas enchanced the S550 Mustang V8 so much that the final product eats Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcats for breakfast. The 4-wheeled stallion at hand isn't that kind of Mustang.

On this occasion, we're dealing with a 627 horsepower and 540 lb-ft (732 Nm) muscle car, oomph squeezed from a 5-liter Coyote V8 with the aid of a supercharger. A high-performance exhaust system, sports suspension, Brembo-developed brakes, 21-inch Forgiato wheels are the among the highlight mechanical enhancements. As for visuals, there's no fooling anyone what this fastback is all about – NASA.

More specifically, NASA in its Apollo era. For the 16th consecutive year as exclusive automotive sponsor of the EAA AirVenture fly-in aircraft convention, we get a glossy white and matte black color combo complemented by carbon this and that. If you're proud of being born in America, then you'll be proud to hear that the Ford Mustang Apollo Edition wears the USA flag on its muscular front fenders.

“Inspired by the Apollo program, Ford Motor Company committed itself to including exhilarating power, cutting-edge technology, and extraordinary craftsmanship in this automobile, which will support the next generation of pilots in EAA’s aviation education programs for young people.” declared Edsel B. Ford II, FoMoCo big shot.

If you're prepared to bid big on this unique 'Stang, then contact the EAA at [email protected] to prequalify for the coming auction. PS: is it us or is that rear wing borrowed from the 2016 Shelby GT350R Mustang?
