It’s common knowledge that the Ford Mondeo is unbeatable when compared to its direct rivals at any category - it just is a very complete and good car. We might be exaggerating, however, until the recent introduction of ECOboost and the general trend of downsizing, their engines weren’t what you’d call the most efficient and the Mondeo lagged behind a bit on fuel efficiency.
This, however, is no longer true. Meet the Ford Mondeo ECOnetic, an unbelievably efficient car for its size, thanks to its ultra-efficient 1.6-liter 115 hp turbodiesel engine and various economy improving inovations. How many large(-ish) sedans have you heard about which are capable of 2.796l/100km (101mpg) over a distance of 2,536km, from the Finnish capital of Helsinki to the Norwegian capital of Oslo? The feat was achieved by two Norwegians in their quest for the best possible fuel economy, they managed to complete their very long journey on a single tank of diesel.

This just goes to show that there’s still hope for the internal combustion engine, and with even more tweaks and progress in the field, it may still be around in the future. They’ve surpassed the 3.4l/100km (83mpg) effort by the American couple in their Passat TDI considerably.
