Ford’s plant in Genk, Belgium has been the birthplace of the Blue Oval’s Europe-bound large cars for the last few decades, with cars like the Taunus P4, Scorpio and Sierra, as well as all generations of the Mondeo.
It currently makes the Mondeo, S-Max and the Galaxy, and Ford was planning to begin production of the all-new Mondeo there as well. However, it seems that things are going quite badly for Ford, at the moment, and ‘an emergency meeting’ was recently held with unions, as the future of the factory looks uncertain, and the future of the plant’s 4,300 employees now seems in jeopardy. Another reason cited for the possible closure is the consistent use at low capacity, causing the company to lose money rather quickly.

Apparently talks are to close down the Genk plant, and start production of the new Mondeo elsewhere, as Ford needs to deal with its extensive European losses this year. Perhaps this is the real reason why got delayed by nearly a year, despite officials saying it had more to do with “various issues to ensure a robust and high-quality launch”, as Ford is planning to rival the premium German brands, with this new car.
