Tired of looking at the fuel gauge, or checking the car's computer for that always-variable estimation of how many miles you have left with the available fuel? Then here's another gadget which will tire you some more.
Ford announced last week that its British customers would be able to benefit from the Econo Check app, a little piece of magic created by Ford to help you cut fuel costs. Simply put, the app calculates potential fuel savings for any car by taking into account the make, model, age and annual mileage and then sends whatever fuel efficient driving tips it can find online directly to your iPhone or iPad.
The system needs a little chip fitted onto the vehicle, a chip that Ford calls data logger. The piece of hardware stays with the car and driver for seven days, registering all it needs to register so that the app's future tips are in sync with your car and the way you drive.
“This new Econo Check app will help motorists to drive more fuel efficiently. Our 2011 price of GBP11.99 for an Econo Check at a dealership makes the service an ideal new year resolution to pursue with fuel prices at a record high,” explains Paul Muers, Ford customer service marketing manager.
OK, so the app is, as any app, free, but the data logger must be paid for. Thankfully though, Ford says that out of the GBP11 to be paid for it, GBP10 are refundable against the next scheduled service.
