Designed to warn drivers when a car ahead of them is about to brake suddenly, the system has a dashboard light which becomes active when such a situation occurs. Ford claims the Electronic Brake Light will help drivers avoid collisions by braking earlier.

"In case the vehicle has to do a hard brake, the action is detected by the system and sent out as a wireless message to the other vehicles," says Christian Ress, technical expert connectivity at Ford Research Center.

Besides the Electronic Brake Light, Ford is also developing other new systems, such as Traffic Sign Assistant and Obstacle Warning technology.
