Ford Introduces 1.6 TDCi, Optional Start/Stop Tech to European Lineup

During the recent Brussels Motor Show, Ford announced a number of powertrain improvements, including the addition of Start/Stop for its European-spec Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy vehicles. An all-new 1.6-liter Duratorq TDCi diesel engine was also introduced during the event held in Belgium.

“The introduction of the new small-displacement diesel engine and of the Ford Auto-Start-Stop system is another important step towards even more sustainable mobility. All through Europe there is a growing demand for frugal, smaller displacement powertrains and new technologies, and we are more than happy to address this demand with our new entries,” explained Rolf Deges, Chief Program Engineer for Ford of Europe.

Introducing small displacement engines to big vehicles is not easy. The new 1.6-liter diesel replaces the old 2.0-liter unit. It comes with a standard Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and delivers an impressive 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque between 1,750-2,000 rpm. When equipped with this powerplant, the Ford Galaxy's combined fuel economy is 5.4 l/100km (43.5 mpg US), while the Mondeo needs just 4.9 l/100km on the combined cycle (48 mpg US).

The Duratorq comes as standard with Smart Regenerative Charging, Ford Eco Mode driver information system and an Active Grille Shutter system.

“With this torque performance, it's now possible to have such a small displacement diesel engine driving even large cars like the Ford Galaxy in a more than appropriate way – and at very low fuel consumption,” said Deges.

A further fuel economy boost of as much as 10 percent can by achieved by pairing the 1.6 TDCi with the Ford Auto-Start-Stop system, which features an enhanced starter motor, capable of restarting the powerplant in just 0.3 seconds. Ford announced that the Auto-Start-Stop system can also be specified on the turbocharged 1.6-liter Ecoboost petrol.
