Ford India Expanding Engine Export

Ford India celebrated a new engine production milestone, as the first batch of 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter high compression petrol engines manufactured at Ford India’s Maraimalai Nagar engine facility is being shipped to sister manufacturing plant, AutoAlliance Thailand (AAT). The move is continuing an export program to South Africa that was debuted in 2008.

The company plans to expand its engine operations, with the number of engines exported scheduled to reach a level of 2,500 units per month. The sales will continue to be increased as projected export demand gradually increases into 2011.

In addition to the AAT site, Ford will send its powerplants to other plants in Asia Pacific, including those already being exported to South Africa. Ford India is also currently negotiating export contracts for vehicles and powertrain components to markets within Ford’s Asia Pacific and Africa region.

"Part of Ford Motor Company's US$500 million investment at the Maraimalai Nagar site, the recently opened engine plant is designed to meet the growing needs of the Indian vehicle market and export opportunities. Covering more than 40,000 square metres, it is an advanced manufacturing centre that has been created with the global best practices for engine manufacturing and has the capacity to produce 250,000 engines per year,"
stated the press release.

Ford India, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ford Motor Company was established in 1995. The company builds and distributes automobiles and engines made at its Maraimalai Nagar site. Ford India employs almost 4,000 people, with its model line-up including the Ikon, Endeavor, Fiesta and the recently introduced Ford Figo.
