Ford Motor Company has submitted almost 5,900 inventions for patent consideration in 2015. The Blue Oval prides itself on this and on the fact that it raised its number of patent submissions by 36% from last year.
In 2015, Ford filed three times as many patent applications for electric vehicle technology than it did in the last five years and also registered a number of U.S. patents on EcoBoost technology. Thanks to the 275 patents on EcoBoost tech and another 200 pending, Ford takes pride on being the automaker with the most U.S. patents on gasoline turbocharged direct-injection technology.

The 112-year-old car manufacturer is seeking a push toward technology for the Blue Oval brand and the company is pursuing areas such as wearable devices, ride-sharing, and self-driving cars. Ford’s new push takes the automaker in talks with companies such as Google in order to provide a better technology level for its cars and to make the tech easier to use for the average customer.

As of November 2015, around 1,000 of Ford’s patent applications registered this year had been approved by U.S. authorities. The rest of the patent requests filed by Ford are in the process of being approved.

Ford’s push for new tech and patents wouldn’t have been possible without its research and innovation centers, the latest one having been opened in January 2015 in Silicon Valley. That particular facility quickly became the leader in patents for the Blue Oval brand, having a substantially higher number of filings than its counterparts. But the other development centers established by Ford haven’t been slouching either, as the Asia Pacific delivered an increase of submissions by 140% from 2014 while the one in Europe recorded an increase of over 50%.

The carmaker from Michigan has a lot more in store for its fans and customers, Ford’s CEO being expected to show several new elements at the 2016 CES Show in Las Vegas.
