Whereas the Ford GT40 of the 1960s was developed with the sole purpose of beating Ferrari on the racetrack, the 2017 Ford GT has been designed to be both desirable and competitive.
Due to the high demand, Ford confirms that production of the brand twin-turbo GT has been extended by two years. As a brief refresher, 500 examples of the 2017 Ford GT have been spoken for up to this moment. FoMoCo confirmed that it will make them at a rate of 250 units per year.

The recently announced two-year extension translates into a total production of 1,000 units unless Ford plans to open the order books yet again. And guess what? This initial surge in demand doesn’t have anything to do with the GT winning its class at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans.

No siree! The already spoken for cars have been sold so quickly because the 2017 Ford GT is very, very cool. “While we can’t build enough Ford GTs for everyone who has applied, we are going to produce additional vehicles in an effort to satisfy more of our most loyal Ford ambassadors,” explained Dave Pericak, the global director of the Ford Performance arm.

If you were one of those who have applied to buy a 2017 Ford GT but got turned down, here’s a little bit of consolation for you. As per the Blue Oval, “year three of production will support applicants who were placed on the waiting list; previously deferred applicants and those who missed the initial application window will be served by production year four.”

What next, then? Well, those who have already applied to own the GT need to update their requests. As mentioned in this story’s title, the application process for fourth-year production of the Ford GT will open in “early 2018.”

FoMoCo also highlights that the additional production supports the decision to go racing in IMSA and the World Endurance Championship for four years, as in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019.
