With the 2016 Ford Focus RS slated to debut on February 3 with a 300-plus HP 2.3-liter EcoBoost and all-wheel drive, all eyes are focused (no pun intended) on the new kid on the block. Like any other major hyping about an upcoming model, the ST is not that hot now in the shadow of the yet-to-be-released RS.
You may remember that last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed was the place of unveiling for the 2015 Ford Focus ST facelift in both turbo petrol and turbo diesel format. Yup, the Blue Oval is now offering an oil burning hot hatch similar to what Volkswagen pioneered with the Golf GTD. Back in 1982, that is.
But the diesel ST does’t interest us on this occasion. The petrol-fed variant does, along with its 250 PS (250 metric horsepower or 246 all-American ponies) 2-liter EcoBoost four-banger. Does it interest you how much this baby drinks when you give it the beans? Forget the manufacturer’s figures - hammering the ST at full potential will see it drink about 15 l/100 km, equating to 15.6 US mpg or 19 UK mpg. Not bad at all.
With the RS is looming on the horizon, the question is: can Focus ST owners do something to make the RS put its money where its mouth is? Of course they do! The latest engine tuning pack comes from UK-based Graham Goode Racing (GGR). Available for the 2012 onwards Focus ST 2.0 EcoBoost turbo petrol, this package ups the ante by 46 horsepower, from 250 to 296 HP.
Torque output is hiked by 90 lb-ft (122 Nm) too, translating to a total of 365 lb-ft (495 Nm). That’s a lot for a FWD hot hatch, but you do receive a lot of extra punch for a mere £1,503.60 ($2,275 or €2,015 at current exchange rates).
