Being at the core of the future plans for American automaker Ford, the soon-to-be new Focus Electric is currently being taken around the world, to meet what Ford hopes will be the crowds of future customers.
Having been presented for the first time in Europe only a month ago, at the Geneva Auto Show, the electric model has been packed and shipped to China, where it will buzz on the floor of the Shanghai auto show.
“Focus Electric is the flagship of our new family of electrified vehicles, showcasing our commitment to offer consumers choice when it comes to fuel efficient or fuel-free vehicles,” Derrick Kuzak, Global Product Development vice president said, motivating the excitement surrounding the model.
“Its advanced powertrain will deliver significant energy efficiency advantages and zero CO2 emissions without compromising driving enjoyment. And its suite of smart driver information technologies will transform the way customers think about energy usage and their transportation needs.”
The future electric version of the Focus, set for launch towards the end of the year, is not revolutionary in the purest sense of the word. It packs a lithium-ion battery pack, it can travel powered by an electric motor for an yet undisclosed range and can achieve a top speed of 136 km/h.
What is revolutionary is that the Focus will be the first mass produced American all-electric. Hoping to make of it the Model T of the EV world, Ford is betting heavily on the success of the model, planning a whole range of electric models that will follow in its wheel tracks.
