Ford Figo Turns 1

A big week for Ford in India, as together with the crowds of pleased customers, it is getting ready to celebrate one year since the introduction of the model that has proven to be, in a very short period of time, a gold mine for the American producer: the Figo.

Born and raised in India, the model quickly managed to get to the hearts and minds of Indians, without hurting their pockets all that much. The model managed to sell 25,000 vehicles in 100 days and 50,000 in six months... There seems it will be no stopping it.

And no one will stop it. In fact, Ford plans to reach even more markets with the Figo this year, after already introducing the model in South Africa and Nepal last year. For 2011, over 50 new markets will be touched by the Figo-mania, if Ford has it its way.

“We are delighted to export it to more than 50 markets internationally from our world class manufacturing facility in Chennai. I was honored to help unveil it in 2009 and am sending my very best birthday wishes to our customers, employees, dealers and suppliers,” said Alan Mulally, Ford CEO.

To handle the ever-increasing demand for the Figo, Ford has up-fitted the Chennai assembly plant so it can now produce some 200,000 units annually (including the soon-to-be-launched on the Indian market Fiesta model).

"Since launching the phenomenal Figo last year, we've sold almost 80,000 vehicles and it has earned more than 20 awards, making the Figo one of the fastest selling and most awarded vehicles in the Indian auto industry,” added Mulally.
