American carmaker Ford is expanding its offering in the electrified segment in Europe with the launch of the mild-hybrid variant of the Fiesta. This is a major development for a car that for years has been the Blue Oval’s top seller on the Old Continent.
This premiere for the Fiesta range comes in the form of the Titanium trim. It is in essence a pairing of a regular EcoBoost internal combustion engine with a 48-volt system that should help the small car gain a 5 percent improvement in fuel efficiency, compared to the traditional gasoline equivalent.
The mild-hybrid is offered in two power outputs, namely 125 and 155 ps, and thanks to the belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BISG) they both get a torque boost of up to 24 Nm.
“Adding EcoBoost Hybrid technology to Fiesta’s best-in-class driving dynamics means customers can have even more power and still go further on a tank of fuel,” said in a statement Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe.
“The Fiesta EcoBoost Hybrid will help Ford bring the benefits of electrification to more drivers than ever before.”
The launch of the mild-hybrid Fiesta is not the first and it will not be the last development Ford is preparing for its range of cars in terms of electrification as it chases emissions compliance.
The American carmaker is planning to have an electrified variant for every car it sells in Europe, meaning that by the end of next year there will be around 18 Ford models at least in part powered by electricity on the continent.
The mild-hybrid Ford Fiesta will go on sale in the UK with a starting price of £19,860. Other revisions for the new model include the addition of a new version of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost and the introduction of the new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to the lineup.
