Cost ownership is something every car user in this world wants and tries to keep to a minimum. Sometimes, drivers run out of ways to do that, but this list of the most reliable eco cars might give a helping hand.
Warranty Direct analysts came up with a top of used cars aged three years or older which offer the best combination of reliability and economy.

Why is it useful? Well, mainly because even though carmakers are trying to come up with new technology that delivers better fuel consumption and lower emissions, things can go wrong at any time.

The following rankings were compiled using the Warranty Direct's Reliability Index combining rate of failure, average mileage, age and repair cost. Also, what you're about to see below are the top ten reliable makes and models of three years or more, as well as the optimal engine and trim combination for the best return at the pumps.

The results revealed that the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic (combined mpg figure of 85.6) had the best mix of fuel economy and reliability. Nonetheless, smart fortwo was able to match Fiesta’s mpg figure though it displayed more mechanical faults than the Ford.

The SEAT Ibiza, Volkswagen Polo, and Skoda Fabia came next in the rankings while Toyota's Auris and Yaris together with Nissan Note secured the last places.

Here's how the experts comment the pecking order:

“The ‘eco’ derivatives of a used vehicle are often desirable, promising economical motoring for the cost-conscious buyer. However, savings on fuel and road tax can soon be countered with astronomical bills for mechanical or electrical failure. It is important to take these factors into account when selecting a car based on green credentials,” explained David Gerrans, Managing Director at Warranty Direct.
