Ford F-Series U.S. Pickup Market Crown Is Now 44 Years Old, Ranger Tops UK Chart

Although 2020 has been a tough year for everyone, including the automotive industry, automakers are always making the glass seem more than half full. Take the Blue Oval, for example, which has proudly announced the F-Series is the number one pickup range in the United States for a total of 44 straight years. And the company has some other sales milestones, too.

For example, the Ford brand has nailed more than a decade (a total of 11 years, to be precise) as America’s best-selling marque. Although deliveries dropped 16.1%, it still managed to send out a total of 1,939,334 vehicles, with the fourth quarter marking an “inflexion point.

This is because the F-150 finally started reaching customers and new SUVs, including the Bronco Sport and Mustang Mach-E, began making their presence felt towards the end of the year.

The Explorer, on the other hand, is now the top midsize SUV with 226,217 units and one of the few positive results on the market, as deliveries surged by 20.9 percent. We can also witness the full transition from cars to SUVs, as the company sold just 37,319 cars during the entire fourth quarter of last year.

Of course, there’s one passenger car that’s not going to bite the dust any time soon (fingers crossed). Yes, it's the Mustang, with the sports car totaling 61,090 examples for the 12-month period on the account of strong performance from the Shelby GT350 and GT500 especially during the fourth quarter. It’s now on top of its segment in America for the sixth consecutive year.

Back to the F-Series, Ford was unable to get the desired inventory for the 2021 F-150 during the past quarter, but the Super Duty models kept the pace with a 14.1 percent climb. Thus, the range closed off last year’s tally at 787,422, which was enough to retain the pickup sales crown for the 44th straight year.

Meanwhile, its smaller sibling, the Ranger – in European specification, mind you – reached its best-ever market share coverage of 36.5 percent of total pickup sales in 2020 across the British market. That was enough to climb on top of the segment once more, just like it did back in 2019.

In case you're interested in crunching all the numbers, we have also attached Ford's official PDF spreadsheet with the 2020 tally across brands and segments.
