Ford F-450 and F-550, Available with CNG and LPG

American manufacturer Ford announced today it will soon introduce a prep package which will allow the 6.8l V8 engine fitted onto the F-450 and F-550 Super Duty to run on both compressed natural gas (CNG) and propane (LPG).

The conversion kits, which will be available later this year, will come to complete the alternative fuel offering which already includes the E-Series vans and the Transit Connect.

“Compressed natural gas and propane offer more than sufficient power for vehicles because they are high-energy fuels,” Rob Stevens, commercial vehicle chief engineer said in a statement. “Other natural benefits for these fuels are overall lower emissions of greenhouse gases compared to gasoline and lower fuel/operating costs for their fleet.”

According to Ford, the F-450 and F-550 are fitted with an engine which is ideal for the conversion. Thanks to the hardened exhaust valves and valve sets, the engine has improved wear resistance and durability for gaseous fuel systems.

Of course, the conversion is intended to draw more customers from the fleet operators sector, a segment in which Ford is becoming a force to be reckoned with. This year, Ford will become the only manufacturer to offer all its vehicles with alternative propulsion fuels.

“Fleet customers are turning to Ford because our comprehensive product lineup provides solutions for virtually every need,” Kevin Koswick, director of Ford North American Fleet, Leasing and Remarketing Operations added. “The quality, class-leading fuel economy and strong resale values of our vehicles provide a compelling value proposition.”
