The venerable Toyota Tacoma is the last truck you'd think of comparing against a Ford F-150 Raptor. But TFL decided to highlight a few similarities between these popular off-road-oriented trucks.
These two don't really belong together, as the Tacoma is a much smaller and less powerful vehicle. But the Raptor doesn't really have a direct rival, so it's okay to put it up against not only the TRX but also cheaper models for the sake of future customers, particularly when these are top versions of best-selling models.

What's underneath the hood is actually the biggest similarity here. Ford's unique approach of using twin-turbo V6 engines instead of V8s means the Raptor has the same displacement as the TRD Pro at 3.5 liters. But, while Toyota fitted sports equipment like a throaty exhaust, its power output is only 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft (359 Nm) of torque.

Sure, some people like that because they think it's going to be more reliable. For this reason, the comparison review mentions the twin injection system (no carbon build-up). Likewise, some just fit a supercharger kit. But right out of the box, the Raptor's power is more impressive: 450 hp and 510 lb-ft (690 Nm) of torque.

The Tacoma following is so loyal that it really doesn't matter that it's only a mid-size. You can spec it to around $50,000 and install off-road gear until it costs as much as a Raptor. People do that. Of course, the sporty F-150 is more of a tech-fest, with more intelligent drive modes and such. Still, the review argues that the TRD Pro is engaging because it's available with a manual gearbox.

In terms of tech, both models have Fox suspension, but the shock absorbers on the Raptor are more advanced. It also does more for you and is comfortable on the road, which is why Ford's product is so popular. But the Tacoma has a timeless quality to it. So which would you have and why? Tell us in the comments.
