Ford is currently working with Toyota to develop a hybrid version of the F-150 truck, with a company engineer telling Ward’s Auto that the project has already begun. The F-150 hybrid will compete against vehicles like the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra, which both offer hybrid versions.
Toyota and Ford signed a deal last year, with the aim to develop a hybrid powertrain that would be suitable for rear-wheel drive SUVs and trucks. Each company will tweak the design to suit its own vehicle, so while Ford will set it up for its F-150, Expedition and Lincoln Navigator, Toyota will adapt it to suit the needs of the Sequoia.
However, engineers are still looking at ways to overcome the obstacle brought by towing, an activity that places a lot of stress both on the battery and on the electric motor.
