In January 2011, the Ford Motor Company shoehorned a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 under the hood of the twelfth-generation F-150. Now at its thirteenth generation, the workhorse from the Blue Oval celebrates one million sales of EcoBoost-equipped trucks.
Let that number sink in for a minute or so. As per Ford, F-150 EcoBoost customers will save “more than 110 million gallons of gasoline” over the nest year, which is “the equivalent of 13 oil supertankers.” Mind you, the peeps at the Ford Motor Company haven’t detailed how they’ve come up with that colossal figure.
“We are proving that with advanced technologies like EcoBoost and high-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy construction, Ford continues to outperform the competition by virtually every metric,” explains Doug Scott, truck group marketing manager at FoMoCo. “EcoBoost is delivering the value, capability and performance F-150 customers insist upon, while helping improve their No. 1 demand – better fuel economy.”
At the present moment, the Ford F-150 is available with no less than four engine options. Other than the naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8, the light-duty truck is available with a frugal 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 and a torquey 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. All engine options are mated as standard to a six-speed auto for the 2016 model year. As for the 2017 MY, prepare to be surprised.
Customers interested in the 2017 Ford F-150 with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 will be glad to know that the said engine is more powerful than its predecessor, as well as more economical. To offer more than 450 lb-ft (610 Nm) of grunt, the new 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 will be matched as standard to a 10-speed transmission.
The Ford 10R80 cog swapper will also help the 2018 Ford Mustang close up the gap to the sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro. Furthermore, the 10-speed transmission will help the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor and its high-performance 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine climb every sand dune and ford every stream.
