If you are a fan of the honest performance delivered by the Ford GT, than we might have some good news. According to the guys at AutomobileMag, a new one could be in the works.
While its not a clear confirmation, Ford’s head of global product development, Derrick Kuzak, hinted there is room in the Blue Oval’s four-year product plan for another batch of mid-engine, high-horsepower exhilarating performance.
“Well I think there are certain things that we don’t want to talk about in terms of four-year product plans, if that’s okay,” Kuzak carefully stated. That statement doesn’t give much hope at first read, but it with models like the GT costing companies more then they usually ear, it would have been easier to dismiss the idea right off the bat.
The idea of a new generation of Ford rear-engined performance cars raises a few interesting questions, including ones related to the powertrain to be used. But probably the most interesting one of all is weather or not the new GT will be another lookalike of the 1960s GT40, or an all-new breed of machine. Also, the new CAFE standards give plenty of reasons why a polluting supercar is not what Ford needs right now.
The original Ford GT40 was a pure race car built in the 1960s to take on Ferrari in the 24-hour race at Le Mans. The Ford GT race car beat the world's best in endurance racing, placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd at Le Mans in 1966. The 2006 model was built to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the historic event, so could the new GT arrive in 2016?
