The mid-sized crossover SUV from the Blue Oval just spawned a longer variation which was specially developed for the Chinese. Boasting with seating for seven and lots of capability and features, this Edge variant was unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show.
After it made its North American debut and its European debut earlier this year, the second-generation Ford Edge finally landed in China. But as compared to the latter two, this one is not a global vehicle. Nevertheless, it features the same Ford Fusion-inspired front grille, redesigned lights, added interior luxury and Ford CD4 global platform.
Slated to be manufactured locally by a joint venture called Changan Ford and to be sold next year via Changan’s dealership network, the three-row Ford Edge has been “tailored specifically to the needs of customers in China,” according to a Blue Oval official. As such, the wheelbase seems to be the same, but there’s a big difference in overall length.
Exact dimensions are still classified right now, but the third side windows are slightly longer than those of the US or Euro-spec models. In addition to that, the family hauler’s tailgate is just a tiny more upright in order to accommodate third-row occupants as comfortable as possible. Due to cost issues, the Blue Oval didn’t lengthen the wheelbase, but made the rear overhang a little longer to obtain the extra space.
“Creating and producing the three-row Edge for China shows how carefully we are listening to our customers here.” said Ford Motor China President John Lawler. To be offered only with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine with 300+ hp on tap, the China-spec Ford Edge will arrive in showrooms early next year.
