Each automotive producer has its own pathway for this and in Ford’s case this is called “Ecoboost”. The Blue Oval registered hefty sales of vehicles fitted with Ecoboost engines last year, with the total standing at 127,883 units.

Now Ford is looking forward, with the company announcing that it wants to triple Ecoboost engine production this year - The Blue Oval wants to have at leas nine models that offer and EPA rating of at least 40 mpg.

Ford will debut its 2012 US Ecoboost offensive with the Taurus full-size sedan, which will receive a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 237 hp and returns 31 mpg (combined cycle) , as well as a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 (on the sporty SHO model), with 365 hp and an efficiency of 25 mpg (highway cycle).

The Escape SUV and Fusion mid-size sedan will receive a duo of Ecoboost units: a 1.6-liter and a 2.0-liter, which return a 20 percent efficiency increase compared to non-downsized powerplants. In addition to that, Ford will also launch the Focus EV, as well as the Hybrid and Energi green versions of the C-Max MPV and Fusion sedan.
