American manufacturer Ford has just revealed its new 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbocharged diesel engine that will be available on the next-generation F-Series Super Duty truck. The new unit is expected to bring major improvements in power, torque and fuel economy, Ford said in a release.
"This all-new diesel engine has been so extensively tested both in the lab and in the real world that we're confident we're giving our customers the most reliable and productive powertrain available today," said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president of Global Product Development. "Our Super Duty customers demand reliability and durability in their trucks so they can deliver the best results for their business and their customers. That's exactly what this engine delivers."
The engine features a new architecture that provides easier access to most components, thus reducing down time. Furthermore, it comes equipped with a new inboard exhaust and outboard intake architecture that lowers the amount of noise, vibration and harshness.
The high-pressure Bosch system was especially introduced to inject fuel at up to 30,000 psi, contributing to the final output of the engine. Aluminum components reduce the overall weight of the car, lowering the final figures by around 160 pounds (72.5 kg).
"Our Super Duty customers are no-nonsense, no-compromise individuals," said Barb Samardzich, vice president, Global Powertrain Engineering. "Those are the attributes our team took to heart when engineering this all-new diesel engine so we can deliver 'Built Ford Tough' capability, reliability and enhanced productivity."
"Developing the new 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged diesel engine was an awesome endeavor," Adam Gryglak, lead 6.7-liter diesel engineering manager, said. "After all the engineering and testing, we're confident this engine will ensure the new Super Duty continues its leadership in capability, reliability and productivity."
