Ford Commits to Green Operations in Europe

Soon after German manufacturer Audi announced it is embarking on a very ambitious project to become both one of the greenest automakers in Europe and at the same time become a green electricity supplier, the Americans from Ford detailed their own plan of action for the remainder of the decade.

Smaller in size and ambitions than Audi's, Ford's plan is however no less important. With an entire range of electric vehicles coming to the market with the Blue Oval in the next few years, Ford bets on a 30 percent reduction in CO2 emission by 2020, compared to the figures of 2006.

Most of the actions to be taken in the future to make Ford a more eco-orientated company will take place in Europe. In the US, Ford has already done an extensive overhaul of its facilities, making some the epiphany of green.

For Europe, Ford plans a similar course of action as the one in the US, targeting its major plants on the Old Continent. Renewable power from hydro-power plants in Norway and Sweden will be diverted to power the operations of Ford's Cologne plant in Germany and of Ford Technical Centres in Dunton, UK and Cologne-Merkenich, Germany,

Ford’s Dagenham Diesel Centre in the UK will be turned into a fully self-sufficient facility, after the car maker will add a third turbine at the site that would generate two megawatts of electricity. The Dagenham center was the first auto plant in the world to use 100 percent of its electricity from on-site turbines in 2004.
