Mark Fields has been elected into IBM’s Board of Directors. The President and Chief Executive Officer of the Ford Motor Company will continue his duties for the Blue Oval while fulfilling his new post.
Fields is credited with the successful transformation of the Blue Oval brand in a competitive automotive world. Since technology and cars are an escalating love affair, Mark Fields’ new appointment marks a definite connection between the tech industry and the automotive world.

He became the CEO and President of the Ford Motor Company in 2014, while his new job on the Board of Directors for IBM will begin on March 1, 2016. Fields’ career at Ford started in 1989.

The extensive experience of the current CEO of Ford is expected to bring new opportunities for the IBM company in a time of need for the tech giant.

While being Ford Motor Company’s Business Unit Chief of Operations, Fields penned a plan to make the company cut losses and earn more money. The executive focused on streamlining departments like product development, purchasing, and engineering.

In the past, Mark Fields led Ford’s European operations, and he also worked for Mazda Motor Corporation in Japan. Back then, Fields became the youngest person ever to run a major Japanese company, at age 38.

Concerning education, Mark Fields has an economics degree from Rutgers University and an MBA from Harvard, which has served him well if we take a quick look at his impressive career.

According to financial analysts, Mark Fields was chosen by the IBM Board of Directors for his focus on alternatives to conventional car ownership patterns, along with the Blue Oval’s push towards the domain of self-driving cars. The two elements might change how people buy cars, along with how cars are used, but Mark Fields seems to have predicted this a while ago and is prepping the Dearborn-based carmaker for the future.
