For the last week or so, there was great turmoil in Scottsdale, Arizona. There, one of America’s largest auction houses, Barrett-Jackson, held its annual event. And, as usual, a lot of cars and tons of money exchanged hands pretty quickly.
Many of the over 1,000 cars on the auction block that were sold without reserve left Scottsdale in exchange for a total of $141 million. That, says the house, is the largest sum in about half of century of activity.

Each car contributed something to the record, some more than others. There were machines that toppled auction records, and others that nearly managed to do so. Like is the case with this particular reimagined Bronco from 1997.

Historically, the most expensive restomod Bronco ever sold is the 1966 ICON Old School BR Build #66, which last year was purchased for $291,000. And that record was nearly toppled last week in Scottsdale.

One of the Bronco that were on sale, a 1977 one in Harley-Davidson Root Beer Brown, left the block in exchange for a whooping $220,000.

The SUV, which is in fact a restoration taken one step further, packs a new Ford Coyote 5.0-liter crate engine linked to a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. The car also received new a suspension system, which comprises a lift kit, custom trailering arms and Rancho shocks.

With only 400 miles on the odometer – all traveled for testing purposes – this Bronco’s body has tons of welds meant to eliminate the factory seems, it lacks marker lights, and was fitted with a pop-out gas cap cover.

There was no big name attached to this particular Bronco, but still it managed to outsell a black one owned and modified at the request of British TV presenter Simon Cowell. His car only managed to snatch $86,900, far less than the Root Beer-painted one, but impressive nonetheless.
