Ford CEO Alan Mulally is the front-runner to replace Steve Ballmer as CEO of Microsoft, AllThingsD reports, quoting sources familiar with the matter.
Credited with getting Ford back on track during the financial crisis that struck the automotive market back in 2009, the 68-year-old is seen as the perfect man to help struggling Microsoft refocus on its core brands. The former Boeing CEO has a relationship with former Microsoft boss Bill Gates and rumor has it he is backed by several Microsoft shareholers.
With Mulally in charge, Ford returned to profitability after the late-2000s recession and was the only Detroit-based automobile manufacturer to avoid a government-funded bailout.
