Few things in life give you that carefree feeling you get from driving on a great road. You know what I mean, that type of road where the traffic is light, the car flows from one corner to the next, and the backdrop looks like something out of a fairytale. For all you keen drivers out there, Ford is glad to present you with the best driving roads Europe has to offer.
Before I talk you through each of the six roads Ford labels as being the best in Europe, where is Col de Turini? Where is the Stelvio Pass? The western section of the Ring Road of Iceland? What about Trollstingen in Norway? These are incredible roads you should put on your put on your to-do list. These being said, the Ford Motor Company's suggestions aren’t half bad.
The first clip of six in the Europe’s Greatest Driving Roads series is one most of us heard about from Top Gear when Jeremy Clarkson was still an asset of the BBC. Yes, it is the Transfagarasan Highway. Many people gave their lives up to build this amazing mountain pass, which is saying something about how brutal the Communist regime was in Romania and how mental Ceausescu was among Communist dictators.
In the second clip from the list, Steve Sutcliffe takes us on a trip to Blakey Ridge in North Yorkshire. The four remaining roads, as selected by Ford and researchers who covered 15,000 kilometers (9,320 miles) in 12 months, are C462 in Spain, D526 and D926 in the French Alps, B500 in Germany, and MA10 in Mallorca.
“It’s amazing some of the roads that didn’t actually make the list – but we weren’t just looking for twisty runs to please the petrol heads. We scored each route for thrills, quality of road surface, accessibility, hospitality, scenery, and food and drink,” said Steve, a gentleman that reviews lots and lots cars for Auto Express. "In some ways it would be nice to keep these roads to ourselves – but when roads are this good they need to be shared.”
