Ford Motor Company is investing $500 million to upgrade its Lima Engine Plant in Ohio and add 300 jobs at the said facility. The program will enable the automaker to build the brand new 2.7-liter V6 EcoBoost engine that will be motivating the 2015 F-150 pickup truck.
The manufacturer didn’t say when full scale production of the engine is expected to commence, but the first units should be ready in a few months as the redesigned full-size truck is set to hit dealerships by the end of the year.
“Our truck customers have spoken, and we continue to meet their evolving needs by providing another V6 option in the all-new 2015 F-150,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of The Americas. “The hardworking team at Lima Engine is thrilled to begin building one of the most technologically advanced engines ever designed for America’s No. 1 truck.”
Ford has yet to reveal performance and fuel economy figures for the 2.7-liter V6 EcoBoost, which will get standard Auto Start-Stop, but claims the unit will deliver “the performance of a mid-range V8 with greater efficiency”.
Tested during last year’s Baja 1000 race, the engine features a compacted graphite iron cylinder block, fracture split main-bearing caps, all-new aluminum cylinder heads with water-cooled integrated exhaust manifolds and a variable displacement oil pump.
Additionally, the composite intake manifold is now lighter and more durable, while cooling jets beneath the pistons help lower the engine’s operating temperatures. Ford says the unit also comes with a cartridge-style oil filter integrated into the top of the engine for easier service.
The new unit will be the smallest plant to be offered in the 2015 F-150, which will also come with a 3.5-liter naturally-aspirated V6, a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and an improved 5.0-liter V8.
