Sales of Ford’s all-new 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine are just kicking off in the U.S., but the diminutive mill is proving to be quite popular for the automaker in Europe. Through the first half of 2014, Ford says that it has sold about 120,000 vehicles equipped with this fuel-efficient engine, which equates to one in five (or 20 percent) of all new car sales.
In the U.S., current buyers can only experience the turbocharged inline-three in the Ford Fiesta, but soon they’ll be able to experience it in the 2015 Ford Focus. In Europe, however, Ford offers this engine to its customers in a total of 10 models including the Focus, Fiesta, B-MAX, EcoSport, C-MAX and Grand C-MAX as well as vans like the Tourneo Connect, Grand Tourneo Connect, Transit Connect and Transit Courier.

“The range of models offering the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine will rise to 11 when the all-new Mondeo is launched in the coming months, and the new 140 PS version in the Fiesta Red Edition and Black Edition shows there is even more potential,” said Barb Samardzich, chief operating officer, Ford of Europe.

Through June, year-over-year sales of 1.0-liter EcoBoost-equipped vehicles half risen by 15 percent, and they account for almost half the B-Max models sold, a third of the Focus models and 30 percent of Fiesta sales. In the U.K. alone, Ford sold 48,693 models with the small EcoBoost, which account for almost a quarter of its total U.K. sales.

Since being introduced in 2012, the European-produced engine has won more than 13 awards including being named one of Ward’s10 Best Engines as well as being named the International Engine of the Year award three years in a row.
