Ford 1.0 EcoBoost Designated Best Engine Under 1.0L For the Fifth Time In a Row

Nearly half a decade after it production started, the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost still is the engine to beat in its category. The latest accolade from the International Engine of the Year jury stands as a testament to the force-fed three-cylinder technological marvel.

Named “Best Engine Under 1.0-Liter” for the fifth consecutive year, the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost continues to be hold in high regard by a panel of 65 motoring journalists from 31 countries. “That it’s won the overall award three times and keeps getting the jurors’ votes now highlights just how special Ford’s 1.0 EcoBoost is,” declared Dean Slavnich, co-chairman of the 18th International Engine of the Year awards.

Believe it or not, the most powerful iteration of the three-banger (140 PS or 138 horsepower) boasts a bigger power-to-liter ratio than the W16 quad-turbo behemoth that powers the Bugatti Veyron. Not bad for such a small engine, if you ask me. Better still, the 1.0-liter unit is now available in eleven Ford models, specifically the Fiesta, B-Max, C-Max, Grand C-Max, Focus, EcoSport, Tourneo, Transit Tourneo, Transit Connect, Transit Courier, and Mondeo. Thanks to this wide range of applications, one in five Ford vehicles sold in Europe in 2015 were equipped with the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost. Not bad, huh?

More impressively, the EcoBoost engine family ranges from the peppy 1.0-liter to the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 that powers the 2017 Ford GT. Other high-performance applications of the EcoBoost technology are the F-150 Raptor (3.5-liter), Focus RS (2.3-liter), and Mustang EcoBoost (2.3-liter).

Available with 100, 125, and 140 metric horsepower, the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost is at the forefront of the down-sizing trend. Joe Bakaj, the vice president of product development at Ford of Europe, explains it best: “The 1.0-liter EcoBoost was a game-changer, and despite others following our lead, it remains the undisputed benchmark in its class five years on. The spirit of innovation continues to drive us as we look to use the same smart thinking for a new breed of efficient, clean and powerful downsized diesel engines.”

Regarding the latter, Joe refers to the Ford EcoBlue turbo diesel engine family.
