Force India Doesn't Believe It Will Run KERS

Although the Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) helped Kimi Raikkonen win the Spa Grand Prix right ahead of Fisichella, Force India F1 team say it's unlikely they will use it.

Force India's COO Simon Roberts gave some insides on the KERS system and their car. Roberts said their car was originally designed to accomodate a KERS system from McLaren-Mercedes as part of its technical partnership deal, but with the recent updgrades they've added to the car, there isn't space for KERS anymore.

He also pointed out that the high cost of the system was a second issue that prevented the team from using it. "We had planned and designed the car to run with KERS, and although up until recently we said we would like to keep the option open, internally we decided the cost for a team like ours was too much," said Simon Roberts.

"Running it was fine, it's just all of the extra equipment you can buy. So we took a strategic decision. The Valencia package actually means that we can't use KERS now. We can always go back though because the Silverstone bodywork can take KERS. We'll look at it on a race-by-race-basis," continued Force India's chief operating officer.

Roberts added he doesn't believe the KERS can always make such a big difference, so until there's a drastic change in the qualifying grid, they'll continue to run without the system in talk.

"It helped Kimi to overtake at Spa, but he didn't pull away. It's about the way you balance your car. There are advantages for KERS, at some tracks more than others, and in qualifying it helps a lot. But the grid has not all moved in one direction," ended Roberts.
