The 650S is last year’s news considering the 720S is so impressive that it actually puts up a fight against full-on hypercars. But be that as it may, a McLaren customer paid big money to have the MSO division create two bespoke 650S supercars, which are unique in every single and imaginable way.
Made possible by the Personal Commission department within MSO, the twins were created in close collaboration with their owner. The MSO R Coupe and MSO R Spider are the modern equivalents of the McLaren X-1, the Batmobile-like one-off that made its debut at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. And you can bet there will be plenty more one-offs in the future.
The MSO R Coupe is wearing Liquid Silver of the satin variety, while the paint of the MSO R Spider has a gloss finish. Even the 5-spoke black wheels share the satin and gloss finishes. The carbon fiber center stripe is a shared design element, as are the rear wing, dive planes, and Papaya Orange exterior details.
From the roof scoop of the MSO R Coupe to the louvered fenders, just about everything you see that’s not standard on the 650S is made from MSO Visual Carbon Fiber. Another visual treat that’s unique to the twin-turbo V8-powered supercars is the Delta Red pinstriping seen on the side blades and front splitter.
Hopping inside reveals MSO R logos and a commemorative plaque, lots of Alcantara, Delta Red-finished seats, and a Delta Red center stripe on the steering wheel. Being personally commissioned, the MSO R duo features hand-polished heads and exhaust ports. The M838TL hiding under the hood is tuned to produce 688 PS (679 horsepower) and 700 Nm (516 pound-feet), which is more suck-squeeze-band-blow than what the 675LT offers.
The element that rounds off the MSO R treatment is the exhaust system, which features a crossover muffler. By increasing pipe length and optimizing gas flow, you can bet your sweet bippy that the sound coming out of the titanium end pipes sounds as glorious as you imagine it to be.
