For World Emoji Day, Ford Submits Idea for Pickup Truck Ideogram

On Wednesday, July 17, the world celebrates the Emoji Day. Yes, there is such a thing, and it’s celebrated for years on this day because the calendar emoji on Apple gizmos always shows July 17, the date when Apple announced its iCalcalendar application for macOS back in 2002. There are currently 2,832 emojis to play with, but apparently they still don’t cover everything.

For the first time since we can remember, the auto industry joins in the fun and asks for more such ideograms to be created. Earlier this week, the leading charging stations operators in the U.S., Electrify America, called for the creation of an emoji to signify “electric vehicle with charger.”

And now Ford, one of the leading makers of pickup trucks, does the same. The carmaker said it petitioned the emoji watchdog -yes, there is such a thing too – Unicode Consortium to include on its approved list a pickup truck emoji.

The next update for the emoji list is due in 2020, and it is then when Ford wants its idea, the result of “months of top-secret development and testing,” to be included on the list. You know, so you can stop typing pickup truck every time you need to brag about something you and your car did.

“When customers started demanding a truck emoji, we knew we had to help make it happen,” said in a statement Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president, automotive.

“Given the popularity of Ford trucks globally, there’s no one better than Ford to help bring an all-new pickup truck emoji to hard-working texters around the globe.”

The Ford emoji lack any identifying trait, so people driving trucks of other makes will be able to use it just as well. If approved, it will become just one of the five billion emoji sent from device to device on any given day. And that's on Facebook messenger alone.
