These days, side-by-sides have become so popular that there are a lot of them to choose from. Many are utility-oriented, while others are designed for pure off-road fun. Honda is one of the manufacturers that offer a great combination of both worlds with its 2021 Pioneer 1000 range.

My first experience with one of these vehicles came several years ago when I got the chance to punish an already beat-up 2015 Pioneer 500 on some windy mountain trails; to this day, it remains one of my fondest memories.

These vehicles can be extremely fun but also very useful, and Honda recognized that improving the lineup year after year. For the 2021 model year, the flagship remains the Pioneer 1000, which is available in 3 or 5-seat versions; there are also 3 trims to choose from for each model.

Compared to previous models, the 2021 Pioneer 1000s get an updated chassis with fully independent double-wishbone front and rear suspension that provides 10.6 inches (27 cm) of front wheel travel and 10 inches (25.4 cm) of rear-wheel travel on both the 3 and the 5-seat versions.

On the Limited Edition trim, the stock shocks are replaced by a set of FOX QS-3s, which should dramatically improve comfort and handling.

Since we’re talking about a versatile utility vehicle, power is key. Customers can rely on the 999cc liquid-cooled inline twin-cylinder that features the same Unicam cylinder head design found on the epic motocross bikes built by Honda.

For the current model year, the powerplant along with the exhaust system is rubber-mounted to the chassis to shield the cabin from excessive vibration.

The engine is mated to a fully automatic six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which features a Sport Mode that allows shifting at higher revs; it should deliver an exciting driving experience since it now comes with steering column-mounted paddle shifters.

The Pioneer 1000 has four drive modes, which include 2WD, 4WD, Turf, and a Differential lock. The top-of-the-line Limited Edition trim comes with the exclusive i-4WD system that uses brake-traction torque vectoring tech borrowed from Honda’s automotive division.

Also exclusive for this trim is the Hill Start Assist that holds the Pioneer 1000 in position on a steep hill while drivers move their foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator.

Inside, the contoured bench seat can easily accommodate three adults as the central part is positioned up and forward to maximize space and comfort.

On the Pioneer 1000-5, two QuickFlip seats pop up from the cargo bed, creating space for another two passages. This layout gives owners a level of flexibility not found on any fixed-seat UTVs, allowing them to convert it from a five-seater to a spacious workhorse in a matter of seconds.

In addition, all versions come standard with the new tilt steering wheel that offers a wide range of adjustments for a comfortable driving position.

With a powerful engine, updated chassis and suspension, a capable 4WD system, and a towing capacity of 2,000 pounds (907 kg), the 2021 Pioneer 1000 lineup offers some of the most versatile side-by-sides you can get this year.

Purpose-built for the American market, at Honda’s Timmonsville, South Carolina plant, they are available with a starting price of $15,900 for the three-seat version and $17,300 for the five-seater.
