Dodge’s only remaining SUV model is available for 2021 in eight different trims, including the R/T AWD. This model stands out by combining a high level of comfort and convenience with the performance of a HEMI V8, all for a starting price of under $50,000.
For fans of V8-powered muscle cars who want the same level of performance out of a three-row SUV, the Dodge Durango is the only viable option.

Out of the diverse lineup, the 475-hp SRT 992 and 710-hp Hellcat are the best performers, but the base prices for these monsters stand at $65,000 and $82,500, respectively.

A much cheaper yet still capable option is the R/T, which might not come with SRT badges, high-performance seats, or silver interior stitching but still packs a capable HEMI, has room for seven, and even comes with the same scooped hood for a more muscular look than the standard models - all for a much more attractive price.

The HEMI in question is the 5.7-liter V8 that spits out a respectable 360-hp and 390 lb-ft (529 Nm) of torque, more than enough power for a fun driving experience or towing 7,200 lbs (3,266 kg). It comes with variable valve timing (VVT) and the multi-displacement system (MDS), which should improve fuel economy.

However, there’s nothing economical about any HEMI V8, so don’t expect miracles, regardless of the engine tech. According to the manufacturer, the R/T will return 14 mpg (17 liters per 100 km) on the combined cycle. It’s still a gas-guzzler but it obviously performs better in this department than its more powerful siblings.

Mated to the V8 is the proven ZF eight-speed 8HP70 automatic gearbox that can also be found on the SRT trims and much more expensive models like the BMW F01 7 Series, Maserati Quattroporte, or Rolls-Royce Phantom.

On the exterior, we’ve already mentioned the scooped hood it gets from the SRT, and just like the rest of the 2021 models, the R/T comes with a redesigned bumper and headlights. It’s also equipped with 20-inch alloy wheels shod with Pirelli all-season tires.

For a more aggressive exterior styling, customers can add the $1,295 Blacktop Package. It brings a set of beautifully designed 20-inch Black Noise aluminum wheels, body-color lower fascia, gloss black badges, and exterior mirrors.

Inside, the R/T comes with standard eight-way adjustable and heated leather/suede bucket seats that are more than adequate since the performance seats available on more expensive models are not a spectacular improvement.

For only $795, the cabin can be customized in three different colors; for that price, customers also get ventilated front seats and additional leather on the door panels, steering wheel, or armrest.

As standard, the interior features a new digital instrument panel and a 10.1-inch central touchscreen with the Uconnect 5 interface that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

The downside of the whole Durango lineup is the lack of standard advanced driver assists. On all models, Adaptive Cruise Control, Advanced Brake-Assist, Full-Speed Forward-Collision Warning-Plus, or Lane-Departure Warning Plus are only available as part of the $2,395 Technology Group package.

Still, with a starting price of $49,400, including the $1,495 destination charge but excluding other possible discounts, the 2021 Dodge Durango R/T AWD is the perfect choice for a sub-$50,000 muscle SUV that offers enough performance for a thrilling ride and all the room and comfort of a three-row vehicle.

Potential customers would have to pay an additional $16,000 for the extra horsepower provided by the SRT 392. That's money they can use to add all the optional packages available and still save up, ending up with an awesome vehicle.
