It’s not illegal to ride in the back of a pickup truck on a public road in Florida (if you're older than 18), though it’s extremely dangerous. In case of an impact, whoever is unfortunate enough to ride in the back can be thrown quite a distance, and the consequences can even be fatal.
Clearly, the woman and the driver in the latest video to go viral know that only too well, so they made sure the woman is securely strapped in.
The video was posted online by Billy Bigrig, who came across the unexpected sight on Interstate 75. The tells Fox 10 he was very amused by the “redneck Uber,” so when he spotted him again driving down Fowler Avenue in Tampa, Florida, he knew he should take out his phone to record it.
And indeed, it’s an unusual and funny sight. The woman is clearly comfortable (albeit a bit windy) in her wheelchair, strapped as she is for safety reasons. For company, she has a few pieces of lumber, a workbox, a traffic cone and a tire.
“Grandma is sitting in the back of the truck in a wheelchair,” Billy is heard saying in the video, notably amused. “She's strapped in, too. Look!”
For the brief moment grandma looks towards Billy and his camera, it seems as though she’s amused too. Clearly, she knows her peculiar means of transportation must get a lot of attention and she’s accustomed to it. The same probably goes for the driver, who must have come up with this solution being pressed for space in the cabin of the truck, where he couldn’t fit the wheelchair.
And since riding in the open back is not illegal and he’s made sure the woman is safe in case of a direct impact, there’s no harm, no foul. Moreover, he gets bonus points for putting safety first.
