Florida man is at it again, but this time, he’s not behind the wheel of the car he’d set his sight on, because he can’t drive stick.
This is the kind of story that never gets old: wannabe car thief sets his eyes on a vehicle he likes. He does his best to get it but, once inside, he finds that he can’t just drive off into the sunset with it because it has manual transmission. No happy ending for you, mister car thief.
This particular car thief hails from Florida and is named Jaylen Alexander, 25. According to CBS affiliate WYMT, Alexander decided he just had to have an elderly gentleman’s car, so he attacked him, “jumped into the car and locked the doors.” If he imagined this was all it took for him to drive off in his brand new ride, he was wrong.
The car came with manual transmission, so Alexander couldn’t get it to leave. Of all the things that could have prevented him from stealing that car, this was perhaps the last one he thought of. So, Alexander had to abandon it and seek a new car, which got him on his way.
He didn’t get very far, and probably the delay helped the police catch him sooner.
“Authorities say he stole another car a few minutes later, but was eventually arrested across town,” the report notes. “Alexander has been charged with carjacking, battery on a person age 65 or older and grand theft of a motor vehicle.”
The report doesn’t mention whether Alexander has priors, and neither does the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Florida, in the Facebook post announcing the arrest. If he does and he’s found guilty on the new charges, he will be away for some time – enough to learn the theory behind driving stick.
