What's the one thing any small commuter like skateboards, scooters, roller skates, bikes or even a buggy share? Means of propelling them or, simpler put, a small engine. Well, what if you could buy a device that integrates the motor, battery and controller that allows you to build your own vehicle?
The device was designed by Guiyang, China-based FlexLab Community, a free online community and physical workshop where everyone can design, make and share their projects. The FlexPV is one of those devices, and it’s described as “an open source personal vehicle development kit working with a collaborative community.”

Simply put, by standardizing the basic hardware and software, FlexPV makes it easy for anyone to create an electric vehicle, and remote control it. This wheel-looking motor comes with a matching app, of course, which connects to the controller via Wi-Fi network. This allows the user to fully customize their FlexPV driving experience. Some predefined ride modes are already available, but you can set your own top speed and acceleration levels.

For more fun, the app enables you to Map your FlexPV path, compare to other FlexPVers and share with your friends. In the future, you will be able to access the community, check out the amazing projects and events with you phone,” the Kickstarter campaign explains.

Its creator claim that this little puppy will be able to offer a top speed of 25 km/h (15.3 mph) and a range of 15 km (9.3 miles) at a 70 kg (154 lbs) load.

Will it reach the market? We can’t tell for sure, but FlexPV did win the Startup Award of Michelin Bibendum Challenge 2014. The company also had a previous Kickstarter campaign that raised 56 times of its goal two years ago. Time will tell, but the idea sounds promising.
