Five-Door MINI Hatchback Officially Unveiled

MINI has been teasing us with a 5-door version of the traditional Hatchback for quite some time now but today the automotive gods seem to be smiling down on us. The British company just took the virtual veils off the new model and it’s not bad at all.

The third generation model is now officially available in a 5-door guise, creating a whole new niche for the brand’s customers that used to complain about the getting in the back of the car or about the room you’d get back there.

Longer, taller and more spacious

Of course, to make room for the two extra doors, some changes were needed. As you’ll notice from the photo gallery, the wheelbase was extended by 72 mm (2.83 inches) to a total of 2,567 mm (101 inches), creating more room for the passengers.

That increase translates into exactly 72 mm (2.83 inches) more legroom in the back, 15 mm (0.59 inches) more headroom and 61 mm (2.4 inches) more room in elbow width. Furthermore, the boot was enlarged by 67 liters, reaching an impressive 278 liters in total.

This car will be destined for those more practical people out there, so MINI thought that offering a 60:40 folding rear backrest would help out. That’s standard and you can also get a 40:20:40 one if you want to, but as an optional featre.

The overall size of the new model is 161 mm (6.33 inches) longer than the 3-door version, 11 mm (0.4 in) higher and exactly the same in width. All the traditional MINI design elements are also present.

Sips a bit more fuel and is a tad slower than its 3-door brother. World premiere of Cooper SD model

Engine-wise, things will be exactly the same as on the Hatchback. The entry level model will be the Cooper, fitted with a 1.5-liter petrol engine making 136 HP and up to 230 Nm (170 lb-ft) of torque followed by the Cooper S that has the same 2-liter 4-cylinder powerplant under the bonnet making 192 HP and 300 Nm (220 lb-ft) of torque. Both of them are available with the automatic or manual gearboxes.

On the diesel side of things, we have a premiere. Apart from the 1.5-liter 3-cylinder plant on the Cooper D model, making 116 HP and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque we now get to see the new 2-liter 4-cylinder diesel unit destined for the Cooper SD, making 170 HP and 360 Nm (265 lb-ft) of torque. These too can be hooked up to either manual or automatic 6-speed gearboxes with the differences in fuel consumption being almost undetectable.

Speaking of fuel consumption, we should mention that with the 5-door version being only 60 kg (132 lbs) heavier than the 3-door model, the fuel consumption and performance figures aren’t all that different.

The 5-door MINI Cooper does 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.2 seconds with the manual and 8.1 seconds with the automatic Steptronic gearbox, returning, on average, 49 mpg (4.8 l/100 km), 3 mpg lower than the lighter version (4.5 l/100 km) that’s also 0.2 seconds faster.

On the Cooper S models, the difference is almost non-existent. The manual does the same sprint in 6.9 seconds (0.1 seconds slower than the 3-door version) while the automatics are identical in this regard. Fuel consumption differs quite a lot here, the manual 5-door S model doing 39 mpg (6 l/100 km) while the automatic is rated at 42.7 mpg (5.5 l/100 km). The Hatch was rated at 41.3 mpg (5.7 l/100 km) with the manual and 45 mpg (5.2 l/100 km) with the automatic.

Moving over to the diesels, the Cooper SD doesn’t stand comparison at the moment, as the 3-door model doesn’t have this model in its range. Fitted with the automatic 6-speed gearbox, the new version will do 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 7.3 seconds and return, on average, 56 mpg (4.2 l/100 km). With the manual, things are 0.1 seconds slower and 2 mpg lower (4.3 l/100 km).

The Cooper D, on the other hand, is 0.2 seconds slower than the 3-door counterpart, doing the 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.4 or 9.5 seconds, depending on the transmission, with the manual being faster. Fuel efficiency was rated at 63 mpg (3.7 l/100 km) for the manual and 60 mpg (3.9 l/100 km) for the automatic, 4 mpg respectively 7 mpg shy of the numbers posted by the lighter model.

On all models you get all the new tech bits and pieces like the new infotainment system and driving modes as well as electronically adjustable dampers. No word on pricing or start of deliveries just now but expect a small premium over the 3-door version and the first cars to arrive in showrooms somewhere later this summer.
