It’s been a know fact for quite a while that Mercedes-Benz was planning to expand on its success with the fabulous S-Class limousine by launching a series of related models. Earlier this year we’ve been treated to the sleeker Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, while this fall will bring us its roofless sibling.
Have you seen the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe? We’ll assume you have, so there’s no real surprise regarding this new Cabriolet version. Or so you would think. In reality, adapting the car to an electrically folding fabric roof proved more challenging than it might have sounded at first.

The Mercedes-Benz designers tried to emulate the looks of the Coupe version on the Cabriolet as well - with the roof up, obviously - which called for a longer rear end needed to house the foldable fabric top. All this had to be masked visually in order to keep the same proportions of the Coupe. Have they done it? It’s too early to tell based on a single image (a render, nevertheless), but based on the recent activity of the Mercedes-Benz design department, it’s hard to imagine it will look anything other than gorgeous.

The same story goes for the powertrains. The new Cabriolet version will borrow everything there is to borrow from its other two peers, so expect a familiar range of models when the car will be finally launched later this year. But the really good news is the Mercedes-AMG S 63 Cabriolet won’t be the only AMG version of the Cabriolet, a more potent S 65 also being on the cards.

Rear-wheel drive will come standard for all models, but the 4MATIC four-wheel drive system will also be offered as an option.

With little time remaining until the official launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, chances are images of the car will start flying over the internet the closer we get to the unveiling date, so stay tuned.
