Having botched things up with the Karma, Henrik Fisker is now trying to relaunch his company with the help of a brand new electric SUV. Called Ocean, the car will be shown for the first time in public as a “production intent prototype” at the Consumer Electronics Show 2020 (CES) in Las Vegas in January.
The news comes less than a month after the company announced the opening of the order books. The SUV can be pre-ordered for a reservation fee of just $250 (the final price has not yet been announced), either via the dedicated app or on the carmaker’s website – one that is incredibly difficult to find, even with all of Google’s might.
Prospective buyers are to expect an SUV capable of traveling for about 300 miles (484 km) on a single charge of the 80 kWh battery. Recharging can be done via a CCS Type 2 Combo plug, including at Electrify America stations, thanks to a recently-signed deal with Fisker.
"I have been eagerly waiting to show our revolutionary Fisker Ocean luxury SUV to the public, so we decided to debut the full prototype – reflecting the actual production vehicle – at CES 2020,” said in a statement Henrik Fisker.
“The world will get to see the fully-engineered vehicle, which rides on a production-ready platform – signaling our intent to get it to market efficiently.”
At an unspecified date, Fisker says reservation holders will be able to experience, via video in the Fisker Flexee mobile app (available on the App Store and Google Play store), the SUV as an open-air ride.
That’s right, open-air motoring achievable thanks to the so-called California Mode, albeit not exactly like in a convertible. Fisker does not give any details yet as to what that means, but promises passengers will be able to “experience the sun, fresh air and an open feeling.”
Most likely, he's talking about the retractable glass roof of the SUV. We’re not sure what it is supposed to do other than retract, but the company says it has a patent pending on the innovation, so we should expect more than that.
Production of the Ocean SUV will begin at the end of 2021.
