Fisichella: Force India to Debut KERS in Europe

Formula 1 veteran Giancarlo Fisichella revealed that his team is not planning on using the Kinetic Energy Recovery System – provided by McLaren Mercedes – until the European rounds of the 2009 schedule. Therefore, the VJM02 will not benefit from the innovative system in the first 4 rounds of the new season.

Fisichella was the first Force India driver to test the new car on the Jerez track on Sunday, but insisted that he is yet to use the technology. Being the first test on the VJM02 ahead of the new season, Fisichella feels there are more details to be looked upon until focusing on how KERS will work in 2009. That, and the fact that the system is rather unsafe and pretty expensive.

“We're not going to use the KERS till Barcelona so I just need to concentrate on driving the car as quick as possible. Most of the teams I think are going to run with it from the European races, so not for three or four races,” said Fisichella after his first run with the VJM02.

“I never drove with it, and I am against it because the teams are spending a lot of time and especially money to develop it. It's still not safe. It's strange to see a driver jumping from the seat to the ground like a monkey. The safety issue is not perfect. We had some problems with the BMW mechanics. I am against (KERS) because it's not safe and they are spending a lot of money,” added Fisico.

The Italian's maiden run with the VJM02 did not go very well in terms of mileage, as a few mechanical problems led to only 31 laps of testing at Jerez. However, during the time spent on track, Fisichella got the grips on the new car and admitted there is an obvious improvement in terms of track performances as compared to last season's model.

“It is a bit frustrating as we could only do 31 laps today, especially as it is very important to try and get as many as possible as we are already late compared to the other teams. I am however quite surprised and happy about what I felt with the behavior of the car today. It's very promising and I felt much more consistency, even under braking, and more stability in the high speed corners,” concluded Fisichella.
