Fisichella Admits Sauber F1 Seat Possible

Giancarlo Fisichella may not have said his last word in Formula One. Although the Italian was initially linked with a racing seat with Force India Mercedes team, it now appears that BMW Sauber is in pole position for securing the services of the 36-year old Roman.

Fisichella initially signed a 10-year contract with Ferrari – as confirmed by the Italian company in a press release – for the test/reserve driver role. However, both team principal Stefano Domenicali and himself confirmed that, if a racing spot would be available for the upcoming season, Fisichella would be allowed to sign for it and put his Ferrari commitments on hold.

As confirmed by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) last week, Sauber F1 has been granted the 13th and last entry for the 2010 Formula One championship. That means Ferrari will have 6 cars powered by their engine on the 2010 grid, as the Swiss outfit previously confirmed their partnership with the Italian company in case they'll make it to next season.

Such an engine partnership may lead to Fisichella switching to Sauber F1 for at least one season, especially since Peter Sauber lost both his drivers for next year. Robert Kubica was already signed by Renault F1 Team, while Nick Heidfeld is in advanced talks with several other teams. Also, the Italian's vast experience in the series – 231 starts in F1 – recommends him for the job, which he admits is a possibility.

First of all I'm happy that they (Sauber) can participate in the championship and I would like to be able to collaborate with a team I know and I got on very well with them: together with Ferrari we'll see if that will be possible,” Fisichella was quoted as saying at the Bologna motor show.
