First Win for New Mustang in a Nationwide Race

The O’Reilly Auto Parts 300 at Texas Motor Speedway night race ended with a bang for American automaker Ford, who is the car supplier for the man who won his first race of the season Friday night. Having won Texas, Carl Edwards also managed to land the first win for Ford's new Mustang in the Nationwide series.

The race in itself, pretty much without incident, ended with Edwards crossing the finish line .482 seconds ahead of Keselowski. Kyle Busch, the man who this season is synonymous with winning Nationwide races (he scored three victories so far), managed to be at the center of the most important incident of the race.

His car was hit by Tim Schendel's Chevrolet, after one of the tires on the Chevy blew up and span out of control. The impact was big enough to knock him out of the race and leave Edwards a clear shot at the win.

“We started out a little bit tight, and the track was actually coming our way a little bit,” Busch said according to NASCAR. “It started to free up a little bit that last run right before we wrecked. We felt pretty good about it. We were just biding our time. We were just running there - we were running hard, but we were just running.”

“It felt like we were probably the only car that was going to give Carl a shot. It’s a shame that we didn’t have the chance to race it out the rest of the night.”

Edwards, the proud owner of a Mustang at home as well, is very pleased with the car he is now racing in Nationwide. As are pretty much all the Ford executives in charge with the car maker's racing program.

"A historic moment today by Mustang ... We are all proud of Mustang first win in NASCAR Nationwide race. This victory by Carl Edwards puts his name into the record books among the many great drivers who have won in Mustangs since it debuted in 1964,” said Jamie Allison, Ford Motorsports director.

“It was always said Mustang was 'born to race,' and this victory, along with the victories Mustang has won in drag racing, sports car racing and rally racing over the years, just further proves that point."
