When the Germans at VW created their multi-variant utility vehicle few people thought this vehicle would ever get to be that popular. Not that the car wasn’t one of the most longevive models in the automotive industry, but we're sure the hippie culture sure has something to do with its wide spread.

The Microbus was added in May 1950 and the Samba or Deluxe Microbus would join in one year later. The second was the most luxurious version of the microbus body-style. It had 23 windows including eight panoramic windows in the roof, two pivot doors (instead of a sliding door) and a fabric sunroof. The idea was to use these cars for tourist trips through the Alps.

This particular unit is not only a rare breed among the VW Type buses in UK, but also represent a piece of history. The original RHD bus was delivered new on the 21st November 1955 in the UK. It was imported by John Colborne-Baber, who was the man to found the original VW dealership in the UK, namely Colborne Garages of Ripley, founded in 1949. For many years, this was his personal transport.

The Microbus will go under the hammer at Silverstone Auctions on February 21 as the auction house believes it will reach a value between £70,000 and £75,000 ($104,000-$112,000).
