First Tesla Model S P90D Clip Gives Us a Taste of the Ludicrous Mode

Now that Tesla has introduced the P90D at the Monterey Car Week, it’s time to talk about the upgraded electric sedan. From the Ludicrous mode to the other, less flashy updates, the questions are now few. We’ve brought you a pair of videos that offer what can be described as a preview of a first experience with the car.

One of the clips is a teaser for the upcoming waves of acceleration videos, while the other gives us a quick walkaround of the Silicon Valley sensation-mobile.

We’ll start by reminding you the tons of giggles you’ve seen in the P85D reaction clips will only become more intense. That’s because the Ludicrous mode cuts the 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) time from 3.1 seconds to 2.8 seconds. The main tech development that sits behind this is an intelligent fuse that has its own electronics, as well as a small lithium-ion battery. Also, the main pack contactor now uses Inconnel instead of steel - the allow also happens to be used for F1 car exhausts, but here serves for dealing with the massive current.

Tesla Model S P85D customers can upgrade, with the operation set to cost $13,000. That’s $3,000 for the 90 kWh battery and $10,000 for the Ludicrous speed goodies. As for the price of the P90D, this starts at $118,000 and tops at about $145,000.

It seems that Tesla Model S P90D owners are already describing the experience on the Tesla Motors Club Forum. Here’s an example.

The P85D is definitely INSANE 0-30 MPH then the pull drops off considerably…..It’s still unlike any Sedan on the road today…..EXCEPT the P90D. I wasn’t sure what the difference would be or if one could really quantify it – BUT you can. The pull off the line is greater than 1G now and its all the way through 60 MPH. Seriously, its all you can do to hang on to the wheel and keep your eyes open. I recommend making sure your seat is where you want it because that force will push you back in the cracks of your seat. The first time I hit 75 MPH, I had to let off and just pull over and think about what just happened,” one owner said.
