The opening round of the Red Bull Crashed Ice (RBCI) World Championship, an event sponsored by British car brand MINI for the second year in a row, took place today in Munich. The event saw a total of 64 participants battling for victory, of which 21 were rookies.

The MINI Rookie Award, which marks its debut in 2011, went to the fastest newcomer on the RBCI track, German Fabien Mels. “This morning I never thought I’d make it so far. I just found my perfect line!” stated Mels with great enthusiasm.

“It’s fantastic to see what rapid progress the rookies can make over just two days of training,” said Christian Papillon, sporting director of the RBCI.

“The MINI Rookie Award recognizes courage, speed and the will to achieve the best possible performance. Which is precisely what the MINI brand is all about. Mels acquitted himself admirably,”
added Max Kalbfell, Head of Brand Communication MINI Germany.

On the other hand, the overall winner in the Ice Cross Downhill was Canadian Kyle Croxall, who was congratulated by last year’s World Champion Martin Niefnecker. Also attending the Munich round was actor and MINI fan Kostja Ullmann best known for his leading role in the ‘Summer Storm’ drama.

Following today’s kick-off event in Munich, the upcoming rounds of the Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship are scheduled to be held in Valkenburg, Netherlands (February 5), Moscow, Russia (February 26) and Quebec, Canada (March 19). The MINI Rookie Award will also be presented at the next three events.

In RCIB, groups of four ice-skaters will race downhill on an ice cross track. The races take place on a 350 meter-long artificial ice track that was specially created for each event.
