OK, so Mercedes is proud of some of its models more than others. How proud, you ask? Damn proud, apparently, since the first GLK model was handed over to its owners by the Mercedes plant manager in Bremen himself, Peter Schabert.
The metallic tenorite gray GLK 320 CDI 4MATIC was ordered by Magdalena Dietz, 29, who is an entrepreneur and PR consultant. We don't know for sure if this is just a marketing stunt or not, but Ms. Dietz's family is not on their first Mercedes-Benz, a C-Klasse, E-Klasse and a current M-Klasse also being part of the family stable.
“The GLK is our most important new model this year,” said plant manager Peter Schabert. “It is the first compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) from Mercedes-Benz and the first Mercedes-Benz SUV ‘Made in Bremen’, so I am particularly delighted to personally hand over the first GLK to its owner. I am sure she will be impressed by its unmistakable look, outstanding performance - on and off the road - and its safety and comfort.”
Apart from the “performance, comfort, safety, looks, yadda yadda”, we can extract the most important aspect: the GLK is a first for Mercedes-Benz. It's their first compact SUV, their first SUV built in Bremen – along the C-Klasse, on which it is based – and probably the first butt-ugly vehicle to sport the three-pointed star in recent years.
But enough of that, the new GLK looked like a best-seller even before it was launched, since 25,000 orders were received since its official presentation at the end of June until the month of September. We guess, beauty really IS in the eye of the beholder.
