Unveiled at the 2013 edition of the Frankfurt Motor Show, the smallest three-pointed star crossover/SUV has just entered production at the Mercedes-Benz factory in Rastatt.
“There is a very strong demand from our customers for SUVs and compact vehicles. The GLA allows us to combine these two segments and appeal to new customers: it is the next milestone in our Mercedes-Benz 2020 growth strategy. Said Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars behind his magican mustache.
The Mercedes-Benz GLA was introduced during the three-shift operation of the A-Class (W176) in Rastatt, without even reducing the cycle times.
“We are very proud to produce the GLA here in Rastatt, at our center of competence for compact cars. We are making an important contribution to the product offensive of Mercedes-Benz.” said Stefan Abraham, Head of the Mercedes-Benz Rastatt plant.
With 70 percent of its components shared with the other models based on the Mercedes-Benz MFA (Modular Front Architecture) platform, the car can be manufactured in any A-Class, CLA or B-Class factory of the world without any major modifications, thus guaranteeing a good overall build quality without major investments.
